Franklin’s Trees
Grey Towers Heritage Association is pleased to host author A.J. Schenkman at Grey Towers Historic Site for a reading and discussion of his children’s book, Franklin’s Trees. This book introduces children to Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s love of nature and the creation of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the Great Depression, which came to be known as “Roosevelt’s Tree Army.” This book event is appropriate for individuals ages six through twelve.

A. J. Schenkman is a passionate educator and accomplished writer. He has a deep expertise in historical writing and is the author of several books about local, regional, and national history. He also acts as a mentor to aspiring writers, providing clear and supportive guidance through the often-daunting publishing process.
Rasha Hamid
Rasha Hamid is a lifelong New Yorker, educator, and children’s book author with over 25 years of teaching experience in East Harlem, Hamilton Heights, Khartoum, and Brooklyn. She’s an educator-activist committed to creating joyful, equitable, and sustainable learning spaces for children and adults alike.
Rasha began making picture books with her students to reflect their lives and passions. Her titles include Kadisa كديسة, How to Bird (Free Spirit Press, 2023), and Hello, Beech Tree! (2024).
